Child-Centred Play Therapy

Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) is a non-directive, evidence-based therapeutic approach that gives children the freedom to express themselves through play—using toys, art, storytelling, and imagination as their language.
Instead of being told what to do or how to feel, children are empowered to lead the session at their own pace, in a safe, accepting, and understanding environment.
At Bright Insight Counselling, we believe every child holds the inner resources to grow, heal, and thrive. CCPT provides a nurturing space where children can explore their feelings, develop coping skills, and strengthen their sense of self—through the natural process of play.
Child-Centered Play Therapy is best suited for children aged 3 to 12 who may benefit from emotional support and therapeutic guidance. This approach is particularly helpful for children who:
- Experience anxiety, low mood, or emotional outbursts
- Struggle with attention, hyperactivity, or self-regulation
- Are facing life transitions such as divorce, grief, or family separation
- Show signs of social difficulties, trauma, or developmental concerns
- Have limited verbal ability to express complex emotions
Whether a child is navigating daily challenges or recovering from deeper emotional wounds, CCPT creates space for meaningful healing and growth.
Benefits of Child-Centered Play Therapy
For Children:
- Emotional Expression & Awareness
Children learn to name and process emotions in a way that feels natural and safe. - Increased Confidence & Self-Esteem
Leading their own play builds self-worth and a sense of control over their world. - Improved Social Skills
Through role-play and symbolic play, children practice empathy, communication, and cooperation. - Better Focus & Resilience
CCPT can enhance concentration, patience, and emotional flexibility in the face of challenges.
For Families:
- Reduction in Challenging Behaviours
Children often become calmer and more cooperative as they develop emotional tools through play. - Stronger Parent-Child Connection
Parents gain new insights into their child’s inner world and can respond with greater empathy. - Support for the Whole Family
