On 11th July 2024, I was invited by an SBS journalist to participate in a phone interview discussing the topic: "How Do Chinese Australians View Corporal Punishment?". This discussion shed light on a topic that has been deeply rooted in Chinese parenting culture yet is evolving under the influence of Western child protection laws and education.

Corporal punishment has a long history in traditional Chinese parenting practices, often seen as an effective way to achieve short-term behavioural correction. However, as the Chinese community in Australia becomes more exposed to scientific parenting approaches and Western values on child protection, attitudes toward this practice are shifting.
Through this discussion, I reflected on the challenges many parents face in balancing short-term outcomes with long-term impacts on their children’s emotional and psychological well-being. It is encouraging to see more Chinese parents seeking knowledge about positive parenting techniques and actively adapting their methods to align with both cultural values and modern evidence-based approaches.
